The ick

The ick is the moment attraction ends, set off by something that does not deserve to end it. He ran for a bus. He clapped when the plane landed. Merriam-Webster’s slang entry supplies the brutal part β€” a sudden feeling of disgust that causes a permanent reversal in feeling β€” and permanent is the word doing the damage. Nothing happened, and it is completely over.

What it actually means

The reference sources trace the dating sense to Ally McBeal in 1998, where it named the inexplicable revulsion that ends an otherwise perfectly fine romance. It then sat quietly for two decades, got picked up by Love Island, and TikTok turned it into a format β€” people listing theirs, in order, at speed. Ick on its own is a much older interjection that just means gross. The ick, with the article, is the specific dating version, and the article is doing real work.

What makes it its own word is the mismatch between cause and effect, and the catalogue is remarkably consistent wherever you look: running for a bus, clapping when the plane lands, chewing too loudly, one particular emoji, missing a football kicked back to a group of teenagers. None of these are faults. That is the definition rather than a weakness in it β€” an ick has to be trivial, because a real objection is just an objection. The action gets the noun too, which is why people keep ick lists.

Two honest things the ranking pages mostly skip. It is not a red flag, and treating it as one is how somebody gets dropped over jogging: a red flag is evidence about how a person treats people, and an ick is a sock. And the clinical reading is less flattering than the TikTok one β€” Georgetown has an Ask a Professor piece on the neuroscience of it, and the note that keeps recurring is that the ick often turns up exactly when something starts getting real. Sometimes it is taste. Sometimes it is the exit, wearing taste.

When you’d send it

  • He ran for the busAnd that was the whole relationship.
  • Clapping when the plane landsNothing was wrong. Now everything is.
  • One emoji, in one messageYou cannot explain it and you will not be talked out of it.
  • Watching someone eat, onceThree dates, gone in four seconds.
  • Describing it out loud to a friendIt sounds insane. It is still over.

Why there’s no emoji for it

Every disgust face on the keyboard is about something genuinely disgusting, and the ick is caused by nothing at all. That is the mismatch. The available symbols are all sized for the reaction and none of them are sized for the cause, so sending one says something far worse about a person than you meant. The keyboard can do revolted, and it can do awkward. It cannot do he ran for a bus.

🀒
Nauseated face

Literal sickness, and roughly ten times too large. Send it about a person and you have said something much crueller than you meant β€” the ick is caused by a sock, not by food poisoning.

😬
Grimacing face

Awkwardness, which says this is uncomfortable for everybody. An ick is uncomfortable for exactly one person, and that person is not going to explain why.

🫣
Face with peeking eye

Second-hand embarrassment β€” feeling it on their behalf, which is generous. The ick is not sympathy; the attraction has left and it is not coming back.

πŸ™ˆ
See-no-evil monkey

Cute, which is the wrong register entirely. It turns the whole thing into a joke you are both in on, and the other person is emphatically not in on this one.

πŸ’”
Broken heart

Presumes something ended and, worse, presumes it had started. The ick usually arrives on date three about somebody you had no plans for.

🚩
Red flag

The other thing entirely, and the confusion that does the most damage. A flag is evidence; an ick is a sock. Vigil draws both, deliberately, because they are not the same accusation.

The ick icon by Vigil
The ick, by Vigil

The Vigil icon draws the ratio rather than the feeling. A whole figure recoils β€” shoulders back, arms up, the full-body no β€” away from one speck, drawn deliberately tiny. The size difference is the entire word. Draw the cause any larger and it becomes a different icon: a genuine objection, a thing worth leaving over, a red flag. The ick only exists in the gap between how small the cause was and how completely it worked.

Questions, answered.

What does the ick mean?

A sudden and usually permanent loss of attraction to someone, set off by something trivial β€” running for a bus, clapping when the plane lands, chewing loudly, one emoji. Merriam-Webster describes it as a sudden feeling of disgust causing a permanent reversal in feeling. The triviality of the cause is part of the definition, not an accident.

Is there an ick emoji?

No. 🀒 means nauseated, which is far too strong and reads as an insult about the person; 😬 is awkwardness and 🫣 is embarrassment on their behalf. Vigil’s ick icon β€” a full-body recoil from one tiny speck β€” is free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.

What is the difference between an ick and a red flag?

A red flag is evidence about how someone treats people, so it predicts something. An ick predicts nothing β€” it is a sock, a laugh, a way of holding a fork. Vigil has an icon for each, and confusing the two is how reasonable people end things over jogging.

Can you get past the ick?

Sometimes. The clinical view is that it often arrives when a connection starts getting real rather than when something is actually wrong, so the useful test is whether the same behaviour would bother you about a friend. If it would, it is an objection. If it would not, it may be the exit wearing taste.
