Red flag
A red flag is the thing you notice early, explain away, and produce as evidence months later. This is the one word in the set where the keyboard has an answer — 🚩 is sent millions of times a day meaning exactly this. It is worth knowing what you are actually sending: Unicode calls it Triangular Flag, and it was drawn as a marker on a golf green.

What it actually means
Red flags start out literal. A red flag on a beach means do not swim; at a level crossing, do not cross; in motorsport it stops the race outright. The figurative sense — a warning sign about a person or a situation — has been in English for well over a century, and for most of that time it lived in dull contexts: auditing, safety reports, medicine.
It became a unit of dating vocabulary around 2020, then a format in 2021, when the joke was to post a sentence somebody might say followed by a wall of 🚩🚩🚩. That meme is what made the emoji load-bearing. The flag stopped illustrating the phrase and started being it, to the point where the symbol alone is now a complete reply.
Success ruined the calibration, which is worth saying plainly. When every mild preference is a red flag, the term stops sorting anything — which is precisely why green flag had to be invented in 2021 and beige flag shortly after. The three together are an attempt to put the scale back: something wrong, something right, and something merely strange.

Why there’s no emoji for it
So this is the honest one. The keyboard does have a red flag and people use it correctly, so the gap here is not absence — it is what the symbol actually is underneath. 🚩 is officially Triangular Flag, described by the reference sites as a flagstick of the sort that marks a hole on a golf course. It acquired its current job entirely through use, it renders differently on every platform, and it has picked up unrelated slang along the way, to the point that online-safety campaigns list it among emoji that can mean something else.
It works, and it is the one everyone sends. It is also a golf marker holding down a second job, its meaning lives in the red rather than in the drawing, and it carries other readings it never asked for.
The colour with the shape removed. It signals a stop or a block and says nothing about a warning you have chosen to ignore.
Institutional. It is the sign on a wet floor or a fuse box — hazard by regulation, where a red flag is an observation about a person.
Emergency, at volume. Red flags are quiet by nature; that is the entire problem with them, and a siren cannot be quiet.
A verdict. It says no, this is over — but a red flag is noticed while you are still deciding, and usually while you are still staying.
Wrong colour and wrong century. It reads as pirates or anarchism before it reads as a warning about somebody’s texting habits.
The Vigil icon puts the meaning in the mark rather than the colour: a swallowtail flag carrying a small X. The colour is still there, but it is no longer doing the work — which matters more than it sounds, because in a monochrome Slack sidebar, a printed sheet or a single-colour interface, 🚩 degrades to a flag on a stick and this does not. It is also drawn as one of three: red with an X, beige with a tilde, green with a check, on the same silhouette, so the set can say the whole scale rather than only the bad end of it.

What does red flag mean?
A warning sign about a person or situation — usually a small thing noticed early, rationalised at the time, and remembered later. It became standard dating vocabulary around 2020 and now sits alongside green flag and beige flag as a way of sorting behaviour.
Is there a red flag emoji?
Yes, and this is the exception in this set: 🚩 is widely used for it. Its official Unicode name is Triangular Flag and it was drawn as a golf-course marker, so the meaning is borrowed rather than designed. Vigil’s red flag icon carries an X, so it reads without relying on the colour — free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.
What does the 🚩 emoji actually mean?
Officially a triangular flag, of the kind that marks a hole on a golf course. In practice it means a warning sign about someone’s behaviour, a meaning it picked up from the 2021 meme format of quoting a sentence and following it with rows of flags. It has also collected unrelated slang uses, which online-safety campaigns have flagged.
What is the difference between a red, beige and green flag?
Red is a warning, green is a reassurance, beige is neither — an oddly specific habit that tells you nothing either way. Vigil draws all three on the same flag: an X for red, a tilde for beige, a check for green.
How do I add the red flag icon to Slack or Discord?
Download the emoji or sticker pack from vigilicons.com/download. Slack: Customize workspace → Emoji → Add. Discord: Server settings → Emoji → Upload. iMessage: save the PNG to Photos and send it from the photo picker.
