Green flag
A green flag is the good version of the warning — a small thing someone does that tells you this is going to be fine. The red flag emoji is everywhere, sent thousands of times a day. Unicode never made its opposite, so people send a green circle next to a red flag and hope you read the circle first.

What it actually means
Flags as warnings are old and literal: a red flag on a beach, at a level crossing, at a racetrack. Motorsport is where both colours got their modern jobs — red flag stops the race, green flag starts it — and the internet borrowed only the red one. Through the 2010s and into the pandemic, red flag became the standard unit of dating discourse, to the point where describing a person meant listing their warnings.
Green flag arrived around 2021 as the correction. If everything is a red flag then nothing is information, and the vocabulary had quietly turned getting to know someone into threat detection. The green flag put the other column back. It is not a compliment — a compliment is about the person, a green flag is about what their behaviour predicts.
The good ones are almost always small and unglamorous, which is the whole tell. He says what time he will call and then calls at that time. She has three friends she has kept for twenty years. They are specific and boring and they are worth more than anything on a profile, because a green flag is evidence rather than a claim.

Why there’s no emoji for it
This is the cleanest absence in the whole set, and you can watch people run into it. Search for the emoji and one of the first results is a page that ends up admitting the thing is not on the keyboard; another is a forum thread of people searching “green” in their emoji picker and finding flags that are not green. The negative exists and is sent constantly. The positive was never made.
Red, and in practice it means one thing. Sending it about something good relies on your reader inverting it, which they will not, because the same symbol has spent a decade meaning the opposite.
The most common workaround, and it is two symbols spelling one word — with the red flag still red in the middle of it. It reads as a traffic light having an argument.
Approval of a task. A tick says done or correct; a green flag says this predicts something about the future, which a tick has no way to carry.
Affection, and it is a heart. Green flags are assessments, often made about someone you are not yet sure about — the heart concedes far more than you meant to.
Surrender. Actively the wrong message to send about a promising date.
The end of a race. In the sport both words come from, the green flag starts it and the chequered one finishes it — so this is the right vocabulary pointing at the wrong end.

What does green flag mean?
A small sign that someone is safe, considerate or reliable — the opposite of a red flag. It describes behaviour rather than personality, and the useful ones are usually mundane: keeping to a time they named, old friendships, being decent to strangers.
Is there a green flag emoji?
No. Unicode has 🚩 (red), 🏳️ (white), 🏴 (black) and 🏁 (chequered), but no green flag, so people improvise with 🟢🚩 or ✅. Vigil’s green flag icon is free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.
What is the difference between a green flag and a beige flag?
