It started on TikTok in early 2023 meaning something quite different: a boring trait on a dating profile. The cliché photo, the same four interests, “I love to laugh.” Beige was the insult — inoffensive, forgettable, the colour of a rented hallway — and a beige flag was evidence that somebody had nothing going on.
Within months it reversed. People began posting their partner’s beige flags, and the tone flipped from criticism to affection: the quirk that is neither good nor bad, just unmistakably theirs. That reversal is the most interesting thing about the word, and it is why the third flag was needed at all. Red had been stretched to cover everything, green was invented to answer it, and beige exists because most of what you notice about a person is neither — it is just information you now have. A beige flag is the verdict of no verdict, delivered anyway.

Why there’s no emoji for it
The keyboard has flags for stopping and, if you squint at a golf marker, for warning. It has nothing for neither. Every workaround people reach for is a judgement of some kind, which is exactly the thing a beige flag refuses to make — and the ironic red flag, the most common substitute, reads as an actual warning to anyone who was not in on the joke.
The only uncoloured flag on the keyboard, and it means surrender. Sending it about somebody’s habits suggests you have given up on them, which is several steps past mildly amused.
The colour without the flag, and it is not even the right colour. Brown is a decision; beige is the absence of one.
