Situationship
A situationship is the state of being too involved to call it casual and too undefined to call it anything else. There is a toothbrush of theirs in your cup. There has been for a while. Neither of you has mentioned it, and that omission is not an oversight — it is the entire arrangement.

What it actually means
The word is older than its fame. It turns up in relationship writing through the 2000s, spreads across the 2010s, and arrives properly in 2022, when the dating apps put it in their year-end trend reports and the dictionaries followed. It caught on because English genuinely lacked it. Dating implies intent. Seeing each other implies a direction. Friends with benefits implies an agreement. None of them name the specific condition of both people knowing it is undefined and neither raising it.
What defines a situationship is a conversation that has not happened. Everything else about it can look like a relationship — the weeknights, the inside jokes, the toothbrush — but the label is missing on purpose, and both people can feel the shape of the missing thing. That is why it is exhausting in a way that casual dating is not. Casual has terms. This has an atmosphere.
It is also almost always asymmetric, which is the part the definitions skip. One person is genuinely comfortable with the ambiguity and one is waiting, and the waiting one is usually the one who knows exactly how long it has been. The arrangement holds because raising it would end it, and ending it is worse than the ambiguity, right up until it isn’t.
When you’d send it
Their toothbrush, in your cup, for a monthNeither of you has mentioned it.
A wedding invitation with a plus oneNow it has to be discussed. Terrible.
Explaining them to a friendFour sentences, no noun.
The drawer that is somehow now theirsNobody assigned it. It happened.
“So what are we?”Asked at the worst possible hour, every time.
Why there’s no emoji for it
The keyboard is very good at defining two people and completely unable to leave them undefined. Every symbol on offer either commits — couples, hearts, rings — or denies, which is just as wrong. There is nothing between the two, and between the two is the whole address.
Defines it, which is the single thing a situationship will not do. Sending this to the person in question is not a message, it is the conversation, opened without warning.
Commits, and commits loudly. Months of carefully unlabelled behaviour undone by one tap — this is the emoji equivalent of leaving a drawer open on purpose.
Closeness without a label, and the nearest thing to right. But it reads as comfort — the hug you give someone at a funeral. A situationship is not consoling anybody; that is rather the complaint.
An agreement, and there is conspicuously no agreement. It suggests terms were discussed and settled, which is the opposite of how this works.
Gets the ambiguity and loses all the intimacy. It says I do not know and nothing about the weeknights, which makes it sound like you barely know them.
Presumes it ended, and worse, presumes it was a thing that could end. Half the difficulty of a situationship is that there is nothing formal enough to break.
The Vigil icon skips the feeling and draws the evidence: two toothbrushes in one cup, one standing properly, the other already leaning halfway out. A toothbrush is the smallest object that implies somebody stayed the night and expects to again — smaller than a drawer, smaller than a key, and it arrives without either of you deciding. The lean is the asymmetry: one of these is settled and one of these is on its way somewhere, and the cup is not saying which is which.

Questions, answered.
What does situationship mean?
A romantic or sexual relationship that neither person has defined or committed to — more involved than casual dating, less settled than a relationship. The defining feature is the conversation that has not happened.
Is there a situationship emoji?
No. Every option either commits (💑, ❤️) or denies (🤷, 💔), and a situationship is specifically the space between. Vigil’s situationship icon — two toothbrushes in one cup, one leaning out — is free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.
What is the difference between a situationship and casual dating?
Casual dating has terms, even loose ones: both people know what it is and agree. A situationship has no terms, and usually both people can feel the missing label. Friends with benefits is different again — that is an arrangement, which means a conversation took place.
How do you know if you are in a situationship?
The reliable tell is describing them to a friend and needing four sentences and no noun. Others: regular time together with no plans beyond next week, real intimacy with no label, and a strong instinct that raising it would end it.
How do I add the situationship icon to Slack or Discord?
Download the emoji or sticker pack from vigilicons.com/download. Slack: Customize workspace → Emoji → Add. Discord: Server settings → Emoji → Upload. iMessage: save the PNG to Photos and send it from the photo picker.
