Mid

Mid means it did not live up to the claim. Not bad — bad would at least be interesting. Merriam-Webster’s slang entry carries the clause everyone else leaves off: mediocre, or of disappointing quality, particularly when others consider it exceptional. So mid is not really a description of a thing. It is a verdict on the noise around it.

What it actually means

The literal word is about as old as English gets. Etymonline has it as Old English mid, from Proto-Germanic, meaning the middle, the midst, the part in between — and for a thousand years it has been perfectly neutral, because the middle is simply where the middle is. Mid-July, midsummer, midfield. The slang took that position word and made it a score, and a score has a pass mark, which the middle does not clear.

Search it and page one is an argument nobody has settled. There are Reddit threads titled does the slang term mid mean bad and does mid really mean bad in your experience. Urban Dictionary lists average first and derogatory third. A widely shared post insists it meant trash around 2021 rather than average. Both camps are slightly wrong: mid is a demotion. It does not report where something sits, it reports the distance between where it sits and where it was sold to you.

Which is why it is so much ruder than average, and why it is almost always aimed at something that arrived with an audience — an album, a restaurant with a queue, a film everybody called incredible. Nobody calls a Tuesday mid; there is no claim to deflate. Merriam-Webster gave it a slang entry of its own in May 2026, while Cambridge’s entry is still three senses of the middle and a note about vowels. That gap is roughly how fast the word travelled.

When you’d send it

  • The album everyone called a masterpieceIt is fine. That is the problem.
  • Ninety minutes queuing for a restaurantNinety minutes. For this.
  • Your teenager reviewing something you madeOne syllable. Devastating.
  • A sequel that existsNothing wrong with it. Nothing in it either.
  • “So what did you think?”, asked hopefullyNow you have to choose a word.

Why there’s no emoji for it

The keyboard is built for reactions, and mid is not a reaction — it is a score. Everything on offer reports a feeling: neutral, bored, unbothered, unsure. None of them report a measurement. Mid is specifically a measurement, taken deliberately, by somebody who stayed to the end and is now telling you the number.

😐
Neutral face

The obvious pick, and it is a face rather than a finding. It says you are having no reaction; mid says the thing failed to earn one. In practice most chats read it as awkward anyway, which is a third meaning nobody asked for.

👌
OK hand

OK is a pass. Mid is a fail with good manners — the whole point is that it did not clear the bar, and this says it cleared the bar comfortably enough not to discuss.

🤷
Shrug

I do not know, when the entire posture of mid is knowing exactly. It is a considered verdict delivered flatly, not an absence of one.

💤
Zzz

Boring, which is genuinely part of it, but it says you stopped paying attention. Mid is what you say having paid attention the whole way through, which is why it stings.

📉
Chart decreasing

A fall from somewhere. Mid never went up — that is the accusation. It was announced as high and it was always this.

Star

There is one star and no scale to put it on. The keyboard can express a rating of one and cannot express five out of ten, which is the only number mid has ever meant.

Mid, by Vigil

The Vigil icon is a meter with the needle dead centre. A meter is an instrument for saying how much, and the middle is the one reading that carries no information at all — except that somebody took it. The needle is not broken and it is not pinned; it was measured, and this is what came out. It also only means anything because the dial has ends, which is the argument in one object: mid is a relative verdict, and it needs a claim on the other side of the dial to be a verdict about.

Questions, answered.

What does mid mean in slang?

Mediocre, disappointing, not living up to what was claimed for it. Merriam-Webster’s slang entry adds the part that matters — something is mid particularly when others consider it exceptional — so it is a verdict on the hype as much as on the thing.

Does mid mean bad?

No, and that confusion is most of what fills its search results. Bad is a strong reaction, and mid is the absence of one. Something bad can be argued about, enjoyed wrongly, recommended as a joke. Mid is the thing you finished and cannot think of anything to say about.

Is there a mid emoji?

No. 😐 is a neutral face and reports a mood rather than a score, and the keyboard offers one star with no scale to put it on. Vigil’s mid icon — a meter needle sitting dead centre — is free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.

Where does the word mid come from?

The literal sense is Old English mid, meaning the middle, and it has been neutral for over a thousand years. The insult is recent: Urban Dictionary ties it to rating media — mid-tier — and to dismissing somebody else’s opinion, which is the use that carried, and Merriam-Webster gave it a slang entry in May 2026.
