Slay is praise for execution — you did the thing, and you did it so completely that commenting on it is the only reasonable response. Unicode tags exactly two emoji with the word: 😎 and 🏆. Everyone ignores both and sends 💅 instead, which means something else. Here is the gesture that actually fits.

What it actually means
Slay has meant to kill for as long as English has existed, and the figurative version — you killed it, you destroyed that — is nearly as old. The current sense comes from Black and Latino ballroom culture, where by the 1970s and 80s to slay was to walk a category so well that the room had to acknowledge it. Drag culture carried it out, RuPaul’s Drag Race carried it further, and Beyoncé put it in front of everyone in 2016. By 2020 it was on TikTok with the lineage mostly rubbed off, which is worth knowing when you use it.
It works as a verb (she slayed), an imperative (go slay), a standalone verdict (slay) and, drained of most of its force, as a reply to almost anything — the stage every successful slang term reaches when it becomes punctuation. Its close relatives all describe the same event from different angles: you ate that, and left no crumbs, and understood the assignment. Slay is the shortest of them, which is why it outlasted the others.
What separates it from ordinary praise is that it is about performance rather than outcome. You do not slay a result; you slay a delivery, an outfit, an entrance, a set. It is applause, and applause is for how the thing was done in front of people.

Why there’s no emoji for it
This is the one where you can watch the keyboard give up. Emojiterra lists every emoji Unicode tags with the word slay and comes back with two: a smiling face in sunglasses, and a trophy. Both are wrong in the same direction — they are about the winner afterwards, not the performance being witnessed.
What everyone actually sends, and it is close — but it means unbothered. It is about the sender’s own poise, a studied lack of interest. Slay is usually praise aimed at somebody else, and the manicure keeps the attention on the hand doing it.
Status, and permanent. A crown says what you are; slay says what you just did. One is a rank, the other is a performance that ends.
One of the two Unicode tags for slay, and it is a prize — awarded later, by a committee, for an outcome. Slay is immediate and needs no jury.
The other official tag. Cool, which is a posture rather than a reaction, and cool people are conspicuously not impressed — the opposite of the job.
The sass, and again it is the speaker performing rather than acknowledging. It answers a question nobody asked instead of applauding.
Works, and works for everything — a hot take, a beat, a photo, a chicken sandwich. Generic approval, with none of the specific meaning of having watched someone execute.
The Vigil icon is a hand snapping, with short burst lines flying off it. The snap is the right gesture for a reason with some history: in ballroom and drag culture snapping is the acclaim itself, applause compressed into one hand and delivered instantly, mid-performance, without waiting for the end. It is the only praise gesture that happens while the thing is still happening — which is exactly what slay is for.
