Flex
A flex is showing off β the detail that did not need to be in the sentence, placed there so you would notice it. The keyboard has πͺ, and every explainer of it agrees on what it means: strength, working out, well done. That is encouragement. A flex is the thing you say about somebody else, usually while raising an eyebrow.

What it actually means
To flex meant to show off in Black American English well before the internet had an opinion about it, and hip-hop carried that sense for decades β flexing as displaying what you have, money, status, muscle. The word arrived in general use with the display still attached but the admiration mostly stripped out, so that by the time it reached everyone it had turned slightly against the person doing it.
The turn is best preserved in weird flex but OK, which became the standard reply in 2018 and is still the shape most people use. It does two things at once: it acknowledges you were trying to impress, and it declines. That combination is why the word stuck where brag did not β brag is an accusation, flex is a diagnosis, and a diagnosis is funnier.
Its most common form now is the humblebrag, the flex wearing a complaint as a disguise. So exhausted, third trip this quarter. The complaint is the wrapper and the itinerary is the payload, and everybody in the chat can see both. Which is the real subject: a flex is not about having the thing. It is about making sure the thing was witnessed.

Why thereβs no emoji for it
The keyboard has an arm, and the arm is on the wrong side. Emojipedia defines πͺ as strength or working out, used to celebrate feats of strength β and that is exactly how people send it, as encouragement to someone they are rooting for. Every page ranking for a flex emoji is explaining that same bicep, which means the search is answered by a symbol that means the opposite thing.
The only real candidate and it faces the wrong way. It is supportive β you got this, well done, strong. You cannot send it about somebody who will not stop mentioning their bonus without it reading as congratulations.
One kind of flex, taken literally. Most flexes are not about money, and the ones that are rarely announce the amount β the money bag says the quiet part at a volume no actual flex would use.
The delivery mechanism, not the act. It describes how the flex arrived rather than what it was, and plenty of flexes are one sentence with no picture at all.
Cool, and cool is understated by definition. A flex is the opposite of understated; it needs you to have seen it.
The reaction to a flex rather than the flex. Useful as a reply, useless for naming the thing you are replying to.
Status as a permanent condition. A flex is an event with a timestamp β a specific sentence, on a specific day, that somebody chose to say out loud.
The Vigil icon borrows the bicep, because that shape is already doing the work, and hangs a price tag off the fist. The tag is the whole joke and the whole argument: it converts strength into display, effort into receipt, and turns a gesture of encouragement into one about being seen. Two emphasis marks, because a flex that nobody notices is not a flex.

What does flex mean in slang?
Showing off β mentioning something so that other people notice it. It comes from Black American English and hip-hop, where flexing meant displaying what you have. In general use it is usually said about someone else, with a note of amusement.
Is there a flex emoji?
Not for this meaning. πͺ is the flexed biceps emoji and means strength or encouragement β it is what you send to support somebody, not to point out that they are showing off. Vigilβs flex icon is a bicep with a price tag, free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.
What does βweird flex but OKβ mean?
It is the standard reply to a boast nobody wanted: it acknowledges you were trying to impress and declines to be impressed. It became the common form around 2018 and is still the shape most people use the word in.
What is a humblebrag?
