Simp

A simp is someone giving far more devotion than they are getting back — the gifts, the replies within a minute, the defending of someone who has not noticed them. The keyboard has nothing for it. Search the word and page one still offers it as an acronym, which it is not: simp was in print before anyone alive today was born.

What it actually means

It is a shortening of simpleton. Dictionary.com dates that sense to 1900–05, and Wikipedia, citing the New Partridge Dictionary of Slang, traces it to 1903, with The New York Times complaining about “bachelor simps” by 1923. The acronym that ranks on Quora and men’s-lifestyle sites — Sucker Idolizing Mediocre, and you know the rest — is a backronym, invented to fit a word that was already eighty years old. It explains the attitude behind the modern sense. It does not explain the word.

The modern sense came out of hip-hop. Dictionary.com dates the meaning of a man excessively attentive or submissive to someone he is attracted to to the early 1980s, and West Coast rappers carried it from there; Too Short, as Wikipedia records it, called a simp a knockoff pimp. It then went enormous on TikTok and Twitch in 2019 and 2020, big enough that Twitch announced on 16 December 2020 that from 22 January 2021 it would act against simp when used as an insult about someone’s sex life. Saying the word was fine. Aiming it was not.

Which is the tension still inside it. Simp is very often aimed at men for being nice to women, and plenty of people point out that the insult mostly punishes ordinary kindness. It has also softened into a verb anyone can use about anything — people simp for a fictional character, a band, a sandwich — where it just means hopeless devotion with no expectation of return. The tell for the mean version is leverage: the simp has given everything and holds nothing.

When you’d send it

  • Replying in four seconds to a message that took them two daysBe cool. Was not cool.
  • Buying the streamer a sub after they read out someone else’s nameWorth it. Probably.
  • Defending a celebrity who does not know you existIn the replies. Again.
  • Your friend cancels plans to drive across town with soupFor someone who says “haha” to everything.
  • Admitting you would do it againSelf-aware simp. Highest form.

Why there’s no emoji for it

The keyboard can do adoration and it can do kneeling, but it cannot do the imbalance, and the imbalance is the word. Every candidate is either mutual affection or plain fandom, so the insult turns into a compliment the moment it is sent.

🥺
Pleading face

What the simp sends rather than what they are. Confession, not label — and too sympathetic to land as a tease.

😍
Smiling face with heart-eyes

Adoration, but cheerful and a little equal. Nothing in it suggests the feeling is going one way.

🧎
Person kneeling

The closest posture on the keyboard, and with nothing in its hands it reads as prayer or a proposal. A proposal at least expects an answer.

💐
Bouquet

The gift without the giver. It looks like a nice gesture, which is exactly what the person sending “simp” is trying not to say.

🫡
Saluting face

Loyal service, the group-chat version. Fun, but it is duty, not devotion, and simping is not a sense of duty.

🤡
Clown face

The self-own people reach for after. It says foolish, which is half the word — the other half, the devotion, it drops entirely.

Simp, by Vigil

The Vigil icon draws a kneeling figure reaching up to hand over a heart, and the heart is beaming. That is the joke, and it is the definition: the only thing in the picture having a good time is the gift. The figure is low, arms up, giving everything; nobody is shown receiving it, because nobody is. Leverage is the missing object in the drawing. It is also the missing object in the word.

Questions, answered.

What does simp mean?

Slang for someone who gives far more attention, money or devotion than they get back, usually to a person they are attracted to. Used casually as a verb, to simp for something just means to be hopelessly devoted to it.

Is there a simp emoji?

No. 🥺 is the plea, 🧎 reads as prayer or a proposal, and 😍 sounds mutual. Vigil’s simp icon — a kneeling figure handing up a beaming heart — is free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.

Does SIMP stand for something?

No. Simp is a shortening of simpleton, in print by 1903. The acronym that circulates online is a backronym, made up decades later to fit the word.

Is simp a rude word?

It can be. Twitch banned it as an insult about someone’s sex life from January 2021, and it is often aimed at men simply for being kind. Among friends, or about a fictional character, it is mostly affectionate.

How do I add the simp icon to Slack or Discord?
