Flaky

Flaky is someone who makes plans and then does not keep them — the late cancel, the maybe that was always a no, the “so sorry, something came up” at 6:40 for a 7:00. There is no emoji for it, and the dictionaries are not much help either: most of them open with pie crust and get to people second.

What it actually means

Look it up and the order is telling. The definitions Google pulls from Merriam-Webster and Britannica lead with consisting of flakes — a crisp, flaky crust — and the human sense they give is odd or strange in behaviour. That is the older slang, and it came from baseball: by the late 1950s players were calling eccentric teammates flaky, a usage often pinned on the outfielder Jackie Brandt, whose mind was said to be so impermanent his brains were flaking off. It meant a lovable weirdo. It did not mean someone who bails.

The meaning almost everyone uses now is the one the big dictionaries mention least: unreliable, specifically about plans. Wiktionary has it plainly — likely to make plans with others but then abandon those plans — alongside the engineering sense of the same thing, a test or a connection that works only some of the time. That second sense is the honest one. A flaky person is not absent. They are intermittent, which is worse, because it keeps you making plans.

It is gentler than ghosting and more irritating. A ghost disappears once; a flake keeps reappearing with enthusiasm and an apology, and the enthusiasm is usually real. That is why it gets said with affection as often as complaint — every group has one, and everyone has been one during a bad month. The tell is the ratio. Cancel once and it was a bad week. Cancel the rescheduled one too and the word is waiting.

When you’d send it

  • “Running 10 min late” sent from their sofaTen minutes is a state of mind.
  • The group chat plan that was “definitely happening”Three yeses. One person showed up.
  • A cancellation text with a very long reasonThe length is the tell.
  • Rescheduling the rescheduleAt this point it’s a recurring event.
  • Your own name, on someone else’s list of who bailedFair. Very fair. Sorry.

Why there’s no emoji for it

The keyboard has ways to leave and ways to apologise, but nothing for the specific crime of a plan that crumbled on the day. People send calendars, running figures and the ghost, and each one is a different offence. Even the literal reading is taken: the flakiest thing on the keyboard is a croissant.

🥐
Croissant

The literal flaky, and a reasonable joke once. After that it just looks like an invitation to breakfast, which a flake will also cancel.

📅
Calendar

The plan, perfectly intact. Nothing about it suggests the plan is falling apart — the part the word is actually about.

👻
Ghost

Gone without a word. A flake always sends a word, usually a lot of them, so this is the wrong accusation.

🏃
Person running

Leaving at speed. Flaking happens from the comfort of home, by text, about forty minutes before.

🤒
Face with thermometer

The excuse, not the person. Sending it reads as sympathy for an illness nobody believes in.

🙏
Folded hands

What the flake sends after. It is the apology, so receiving it confirms the crime and names nothing.

Flaky icon by Vigil
Flaky, by Vigil

The Vigil icon draws a calendar page with one corner crumbling into flakes. The page is mostly fine — that is the point. Nothing has been torn out or crossed off; the plan is still technically there, it is just coming apart at one edge, gently, without anybody doing anything to it. That is how flaking feels from the other side. Nobody cancels. The plan erodes.

Questions, answered.

What does flaky mean?

Unreliable about plans — someone who agrees to things and then cancels late or does not show up. In older slang and some dictionaries it means eccentric or odd, and literally it describes something that breaks into flakes, like pastry.

Is there a flaky emoji?

No. 🥐 is the pastry, 📅 is the plan still intact, and 👻 is ghosting, which is a different offence. Vigil’s flaky icon — a calendar page crumbling at one corner — is free as a Slack or Discord emoji, an iMessage or WhatsApp sticker, or an SVG.

Is it flaky or flakey?

Either. Collins and Vocabulary.com both list flakey as a variant spelling of flaky, with the same meanings — the pastry, the eccentric and the person who cancels.

Is flaking the same as ghosting?

No. Ghosting is disappearing without explanation. Flaking is staying in touch and repeatedly cancelling, usually with an apology — the person never leaves, the plans do.

How do I add the flaky icon to Slack or Discord?

Download the emoji or sticker pack from vigilicons.com/download. Slack: Customize workspace → Emoji → Add. Discord: Server settings → Emoji → Upload. iMessage: save the PNG to Photos and send it from the photo picker.
