Touch grass
Touch grass is the instruction to leave the argument, leave the feed, and make physical contact with the outdoors — traditionally delivered to someone who has been extremely online for extremely long. The keyboard has plants. It has a hand. It has no way of putting them together, which is unfortunate, because the contact is the entire instruction.

What it actually means
It grew out of gaming and forum culture in the late 2010s and went general on Twitter around 2021, at the point where arguing with strangers had become a full-time hobby for a visible number of people. The phrasing is what made it survive. Not go outside, which is vague and easy to claim you already did — touch grass, a single small tactile act, the cheapest possible proof that you are somewhere with weather.
Its usual register is an insult, and it is worth being straight about that. Sent mid-argument it means your position is so detached from ordinary life that the problem is not the argument, it is you. The Discord emoji libraries describe it exactly that way. It is dismissal dressed as concern, and it lands hard precisely because it sounds caring.
There is a second, quieter life though, and it is the one worth keeping. Sent to a friend who has been doomscrolling since Tuesday, or muttered at yourself at 1am with the feed still going, it stops being an insult and becomes what it literally says: a suggestion that the physical world is still there, is free, and is about eleven steps away.

Why there’s no emoji for it
This query is unusual for the set: the results are not dictionaries but other custom-emoji sites — Slack packs, Discord uploads, a Twitch emote on Etsy. Which tells you two things. Everyone reaching for this wants a picture rather than a definition, and everybody who has drawn one has drawn the same thing, a hand reaching into grass. The keyboard is the only place it does not exist.
A plant that has just started, and the point is not growth. Grass is not a seedling and touching one would be discouraging for both of you.
A sprig, which is an ingredient. It reads as garnish, or as somebody about to make a mojito, not as a lawn.
The prettiest option and the least accurate: the leaf has detached and is leaving. Nothing is touching anything.
What the combo sites recommend, and it is two symbols side by side with a gap between them. The gap is the problem — the contact is the instruction, and a palm hovering near a seedling is exactly not that.
The right idea with institutional delivery. It is the sign in a cinema: a prohibition issued by a building, where touch grass is one person telling another to go outside.
An entire vista. Asking for a landscape makes it sound like a trip you have to plan, and the whole appeal of touch grass is that it costs nothing and takes a minute.
The Vigil icon draws the contact: a finger arriving on three blades of grass, with a small spark where they meet. The spark is the part that matters — it is the instruction landing, the moment the physical world registers again — and it is the thing no combination of a hand emoji and a plant emoji can produce, because those two never touch. Three blades rather than a lawn, because at emoji size a lawn is a green smudge and three blades still read as grass. It is drawn as the kind version, an invitation rather than a dismissal, which is the reading worth keeping.
