Sus is suspicion before evidence — the pause where something does not add up and you have not decided what to do about it. Unicode gets closer to this one than to most: 🤨 exists. But it arrives as a whole face, and the rest of the face argues. Here is the eyebrow on its own.

What it actually means
Sus is suspicious with the ending cut off, and it was doing quiet work in British police and prison slang for decades before anyone posted it. What made it universal was Among Us in 2020, where the entire game is nine people saying a colour and the word sus to each other until somebody gets thrown out of an airlock. The game faded. The word did not, because it turned out to be more useful than the one it came from: suspicious is a judgement, sus is a raised eyebrow you can withdraw.
It now runs in three registers that share a spelling. There is the diagnostic — that link is sus, do not click it. There is the accusation, straight from the game, where calling someone sus is the whole move. And there is the innuendo one, where sus means that came out wrong, which is the reading the Lenny face has always covered and the one that gets a message misread if you pick the wrong symbol for it.
What holds all three together is provisionality. Sus is never a verdict. You are not saying they did it; you are saying the arithmetic is off and you have noticed. That is why it survived its own meme — the word does something no single-word alternative does, which is register doubt without committing to it.

Why there’s no emoji for it
This is the one word in the set where Unicode almost has it. The raised-eyebrow face landed in 2017 and it is genuinely close — which makes the near miss more annoying than an absence would be, and sends people hunting for combos anyway.
The closest thing Unicode has, and still wrong: the mouth is set in a flat line doing its own work, so the whole face reads as offended rather than unconvinced. Sus is lighter than offence.
A Sinhala letter that happens to look like an Among Us character. Not an emoji, renders as a box on plenty of clients, and timestamps your message to 2020.
Investigating, not suspecting. It reads as Sherlock — someone who has opened a case file. Sus has not got that far.
The innuendo sus, not the suspicious sus. Same word, different meaning, and picking the wrong one changes what you appear to be saying.
Watching, not judging. There is no opinion in it — it says I am looking, where sus says I have looked and something is off.
You already know. Sus is specifically the moment before knowing, which is why the smirk skips past it.
The Vigil icon is two eyes and one raised eyebrow. No mouth, no brows-and-nose, no face doing three things at once — because the eyebrow is the entire message and everything else added to it is noise that changes the reading. It works at emoji size for the same reason: one moving part, and you can see which one moved.
